Managing our environmental issues
We aim to consume less of the world’s resources, generate less waste, recycle more and sensitively dispose of what remains.
2010 highlights
- Ranked 12th in the FTSE 350 carbon league table, topping the life insurance sector.
- A score of 82% in the Carbon Disclosure Project FTSE350 Leadership Index.
- Our Group carbon footprint remained stable at 25,980 tonnes and is 20% lower than 2006.
- Since 2006, we have reduced Group energy use by 19% and paper consumption by 32%, putting us on track to achieve our 2012 UK targets.
As a business, we impact on the environment through our day-to-day operations, but also through our influence as an investor – where we can promote better environmental management in the companies in which we invest.

We're working to reduce our carbon footprint, minimise our use of valuable resources such as energy and water, and minimise waste in our business. We believe the main environmental issues facing our business are:
- our emissions
- our use of energy, paper and other resources
- business travel (in particular air travel)
- the amount of waste we produce.
Environmental sustainability is an important issue for society and the benefits of embedding it into everyday business processes and practices are increasingly evident.
