Investing for our future. Corporate Responsibility at Standard Life.

Corporate responsibility means many things to many people. For some, it is about recycling, improving the environment or working to help local communities. For others, it is something more strategic and ethical - it’s about how you run your business to ensure it’s sustainable in the long-term.

At Standard Life, it’s also about listening to our customers’ needs and building trust with them, investing customers’ money responsibly, acting with integrity and to the highest ethical standards.

Companies play an important role in the world around them and can have a major impact on the communities and environment in which they operate.  At Standard Life, we take our corporate responsibilities very seriously and are determined to pursue the highest standards at all times, in everything we do.

Reporting
Each year, Standard Life produces a corporate responsibility report highlighting how we have carried out our responsibilities in the previous year.  Our first corporate responsibility report was published in 2006, for the calendar year 2005.

This year sees the publication of our fifth annual corporate responsibility report.  This latest report demonstrates our continued commitment to corporate responsibility through 2009.  It recognises that we are continuing on our corporate responsibility journey, building on the good work we carried out in the past.

Including the approach we take, our engagement with stakeholders, our material issues and how we performed against these over the last year.

Key points covered in this years report include:

  • our approach to corporate responsibility
  • identifying and engaging with our stakeholders
  • how we identify our material issues and subsequent changes to them
  • our performance over the year
  • case studies of corporate responsibility in action

The full report is woven through the corporate responsibility area of the website.  There is also a shorter summary report available as a downloadable pdf PDF document.  Archived reports are also available

External commentary
Corporate Citizenship has provided an external commentary on our corporate responsibility performance during 2009.  In addition, this year, they have also carried out data assurance on specific aspects of our reporting.
